NRC l National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences

Greetings! I am Seong Kyoung Ryung, Chairman of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC).

This August, the NRC, Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and regional governments will be hosting the「DMZ International Forum on the Peace Economy」.

Ever since the reunification of Germany, the demilitarized zone (DMZ) has become a symbol that reminds us all that Korea is the only divided country in the world. The DMZ has remained untouched for more than 60 years and now become a rich repository of natural ecosystems. Immersing ourselves in this unique venue and walking alongside notable thinkers and opinion leaders around the world, we would like to share the vision and mission to create a new paradigm of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula. Through this forum, we will envision a “people-centered cooperative community for peace and prosperity” as well as an “East Asian Peace Cooperative” that can contribute to the vision of a world-inclusive peaceful nation promoting global peace.

President Moon Jae-in in his March 1st Independence movement commemoration address has asked us to end the “the obsolete legacies of the cold war and national division that plagued the peninsula for the past 100 years and to seek a new order in the Korean Peninsula based on peace, coexistence and inclusion for the next 100 years.” In the「DMZ International Forum on the Peace Economy」, we would like to take the first step to prepare the Korean Peninsula for the next 100 years as a nation that contributes to world peace, prosperity and the common good.

We ask for your kind support so that our forum can produce policies and roadmaps for the path to peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula.

Thank you.

LEE Jae-YoungChair of the Executive Committee for the DMZ International Forum on the Peace Economy,
President of Korea Institute for International Economic Policy

KIEP l Korea Institute for International Economic Policy

The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) and the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC) will be hosting the「DMZ International Forum on the Peace Economy」in Seoul this coming August.

The goal of securely establishing peace and forming an economic community on the Korean Peninsula lies at the core of improving inter-Korean relations and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. During his congratulatory speech marking the 2018 National Liberation Day of Korea, President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea presented the vision of a peace economy with the words, “Peace is the economy; peace and the economy are synonymous.” Further developing this vision, the NRC and KIEP are organizing the「DMZ International Forum on the Peace Economy」to form international discourse for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and advance toward sustainable development.

Distinguished guests from Korea and abroad will attend the forum to discuss policies on the peace economy under the slogan of “Peace is the economy.” Building on this, we plan to enhance understanding of the New Economic Map of the Korean Peninsula and contribute to a consensus in the international community. Above all, we hope that the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) experience and forum will allow participants to fully appreciate the reality of the divided Koreas and the need to establish peace. In addition, we would like to share our vision of the new Korean Peninsula regime and peace economy.

Amid the recent global environment changes caused by the spread of protectionism, U.S.-China trade disputes, geopolitical risks and other developments, uncertainty has increased in the international order. Through this forum, KIEP will take the first step in opening an era of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.

We are confident the「DMZ International Forum on the Peace Economy」will serve as a venue for meaningful communication within Korea and throughout the international community, and lead to various ideas to support the peace economy on the Korean Peninsula. We ask for your continued interest in the forum.

Thank you.
